The Dave Clark Five – LIVE! on “The Ed Sullivan Show” at CBS Studio 50 in New York City.

On March 8, 1964, the Dave Clark Five sang their smash hit “Glad All Over” to American audiences on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” The song knocked The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” out of the No. 1 spot in the U.K.

The band initially passed on the show and soon regretted not accepting Ed Sullivan’s invitation. “I’d never heard of him,” claimed Clark in an interview with USA Today, not yet understanding the massive success that came from performing on the hit variety show. Luckily for the band, Ed re-extended the invite and the group was happy to oblige the second time. They would go on to appear a total of 12 more times on the show during the height of their popularity. Songs such as “Bits and Pieces,” “Do You Love Me?” and “Over and Over” were performed on the famous CBS-TV Studio 50 stage (now the “Ed Sullivan Theater”) with swarms of swooning girls falling for the British pop stars.

The crowds were out of control when the band took the stage. Ed yelled, “Look, kids, we’ve got the Dave Clark Five on tonight. Now, I don’t mind if you carry on when they come out, but remember there are other acts on the bill!” Sullivan’s pleas fell on deaf ears as fans continuously screeched at the top of their lungs throughout the live broadcast.

The group placed 17 songs in the Top 40 (15 consecutively), 8 of which went into the Top Ten, and one, “Over and Over,” that hit No. 1. However, in 1970, their popularity was waning, and the group decided to split.

The five-some was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 – 44 years after their debut performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964.

The Dave Clark Five: Dave Clark (vocals/drums), Mike Smith (vocals/keyboards), Lenny Davidson (guitar), Denny Payton (saxophone), and Rick Huxley (bass).

The Real Dynamic Duo: Martin & Lewis

One of the greatest comedy teams of all time! Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis’ partnership lasted 10-yrs and from 1950 to 1956 they were No. 1 at the box-office in terms of earnings. The pair took their nightclub act to Hollywood where they made 16 films together and numerous television shows while still performing their act live on stage.

After their bitter split, Dean would join Sinatra & the rest of the Rat Pack for a successful career. Sadly, he died on Christmas Day in 1995. Comic legend Jerry Lewis turns 88 on March 16, 2014. He went on to directing, producing and writing for movies and TV.

For more info on this dynamic duo (from Lewis’ perspective) check out – “Dean and Me: A Love Story.”

The Day the Music Died – 55 years ago!

February 3, 1959 – the day when a chartered, 4-passenger, 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza 35 carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” RIchardson crashed in a cornfield in Iowa.

The trio was on their “Winter Dance Party” tour and scheduled to hit 25 Midwestern cities in 3-weeks. Fed up by rough, unreliable bus rides that left band members sick and one hospitalized with frostbite (and to get laundry done), Holly decided to charter a plane from Iowa to Minnesota.Image

Twenty-two year old Buddy Holly was reluctant to join the tour but did as his finances were tied up due to a split with his manager. To Holly’s surprise and disappointment The Crickets stayed with the manager.

Waylon Jennings, of “Dukes of Hazzard” fame, was a then-new addition to Buddy Holly’s band. He elected to take the bus so he gave up his seat on the plane to The Big Bopper (Ritchie Valens won his seat on the plane after guitarist Tommy Allsup lost a coin toss). The Big Bopper was a Texas disc-jockey who wrote Johnny Preston’s million-selling hit “Running Bear” (1960). The body of The Big Bopper was thrown about 40-ft beyond the wire fence and about 40-ft beyond the wreckage.

An official investigation determined that a combination of weather related conditions and pilot error caused the pilot to lose control of the plane.

Don McLean’s “American Pie” is often cited as the first song to memorialize the fateful event. However, the first song was actually Eddie Cochran’s “Three Stars.”

Classic Buddy Holly Recordings Include: Image

  • “That’ll Be The Day” (1957)
  • “Peggy Sue” (1957)
  • “Oh, Boy” (1958)
  • “Crying, Waiting, Hoping” (1959)
  • “True Love Way” (1960)

Some songs were credited to The Crickets.

“That’ll Be The Day” – became the title of The Crickets’ first hit. The song went to No. 1 in the summer of ’57.

“Peggy Sue,” written by Holly, was originally titled “Cindy Lou.”

Buddy Holly, who asked his wife to marry him on their first date, was born Charles Hardin Holley. He dropped the “E” in 1956.

Ritchie Valens, born Richard Valenzuela had hits with “Donna,” Come On Let’s Go” and “La Bamba.”

Legendary Performance at The Grand Ole Opry – Jan. 20, 1973

The Grand Ole Opry

ON THIS DAY IN ROCK HISTORY: Jan. 20, 1973 – Rock Wildman Jerry Lee Lewis performs at the legendary Grand Ole Opry for the first time ever. The Opry asks him to play only country music & refrain from using any obscenities.

Well, “The Killer”storms his way through Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say” and then blows off commercial breaks with an amazing non-stop 40-minute melody consisting of Merle Haggard’s “Workin’ Man Blues” into Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” into his own “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” into The Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace before telling the crowd, “I am the rock ‘n’ rollin’, country and western, rhythm and blues singin’ motherf*cker.”

One of the best shows ever. The crowd went wild.

Stings like a Bee – Call the Police!

The Police

Gordon Sumner, better known to the world as Sting, was the lead singer of The Police – hugely popular in the 1980s (the band formed in ’77). Like all great bands, creative differences split the group up and Sting went onto a successful solo career. He is also a distinguished songwriter and actor as well as an active philanthropist.

The band’s album, “Synchronicity” shot to #1 on both the US and UK music charts. Two more albums that broke the Top Ten are “Ghost in the Machine” and “Zenyatta Mondatta.”

The single “Message in a Bottle” took the No. 1 spot in the UK but stalled out #74 in the US. However, they scored a major hit with “Every Breath You Take” – which hit Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also went straight to the top in the UK.

“Roxanne” (not the Steve Martin film) failed to chart when first released in the spring of 1978 but it peaked at No. 12 on the singles chart in the UK when it was re-released in ’79, taking their debut “Outlandos d’Amour” to No. 6 on the UK album chart.

Sting got the nickname from a black and yellow sweater he would wear during his early days as a musician.

Sting goes on tour with legend Paul Simon this Spring (2014).

Imagery of Rock Artist Dies at 71

Cream

Disraeli Gears

Legendary artist Martin Sharp died December 5th at age 71. Towards the end of the ’60s, he shaped the imagery of rock.

It all started with a beer at London’s Speakeasy Club in 1967 where Martin befriended two musicians. He told the musicians that he had written a poem that might make a good song. One of the musicians said that he needed lyrics for some new music he wrote. So, Martin scratched his poem along with his address on a cocktail napkin. A few weeks later, the same musician stopped by and gave him a 45 record. That musician, a guitarist in a band called Cream, was Eric Clapton.

On the A side was a song called “Strange Brew” and on the B side was “Tales of Brave Ulysses” – which was Martin’s poem set to music. Martin and Eric would soon move into together (along with their girlfriends and other band members). By the end of the year, Cream released “Disraeli Gears” featuring Martin’s artwork on the cover.

The album artwork (pictured) is one of the most recognizable in rock history. The psychedelic artwork features a lush sprawl of color that blended photos of band members in a brightly colored garden of feathers and flower petals. The album reached Number 4 on the U.S. music charts (No. 5 in Britian).

OzMartin went on to make some of the most memorable posters of Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. In 1970, he headed back to Australia where he became one of his country’s most prominent artists. He started to focus on an unusual performer who played the ukulele and sang in a falsetto voice – his name was Tiny Tim.

Tiny Tim, born Herbert Khaury died in 1996.

One of Martin’s most memorale works was a painting of Marilyn Monroe blooming in a van Gogh vase. He would serve time for breaking obscenity laws in his native Australia for a photograph showing men pretending to urinate on a fountain made by prominent sculptor Tom Bass. The conviction was later overturned.

R.I.P.

Martin Sharp 1942 – 2013.

Legendary Singer-Songwriter Phil Collins Writing Songs Again!

Tags

, , , , , , , , , ,

Phil Collins recently announced that he is bored with retirement and getting back to writing songs. We’re disappointed that he is not interested in touring and we will pray everyday that he changes his mind – because at Front Row Center – WE LOVE PHIL COLLINS (Genesis too!). Such talent! Matter-of-fact – it is our belief that anytime the drummer sings – the band has to be great (Check out Cowboy Mouth – their live shows are great)

How about Don Henley’s distinctive voice on such Eagles hits as “Hotel California” and “Witchy Woman.” We are big fans of Henley’s solo work. In 2008, he took the #87 spot in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of all-time greatest singers. Go Don!

For some reason we didn’t see Phil on that list (We’re not sure what was going on with our friends over at Rolling Stone that day).

Let’s not forget Micky Dolenz of The Monkees fame. Several of the groups hits show that he is a very gifted singer.  Take another listen to “I’m a Believer” and “Last Train to Clarksville” to see what we mean. Hey – at Front Row Center – we give credit where credit is due (unlike the big banks of today).

A last note on Phil Collins – as huge fans – we wish him the very best. We also love Peter Gabriel – but we’re glad he left Genesis in ’74 because against all odds – Phil was able to take over after the band went through hundreds of failed auditions trying to find a new frontman to replace Gabriel. No jacket required here! Peter Gabriel went on to have great success as did Phil Collins – Don Henley too! We are a believer that Phil will tour again!
